sheet, it will make the race far more enjoyable for
you and reduce the need to ask many questions on the
day. Good luck and have a great race!
Vic Bickerton, Race Director.
Volunteers Wanted...
Do you have family or friends supporting you at the
South Coast Triathlon? We always need volunteers for
the race, on all areas from timing through to finish
line refreshments. No experience is necessary and
every volunteer receives a pair of designer Sundog
sports sunglasses worth £45.00, the official
race T-shirt, food and drink for the duration and
lots of thanks as we rely so much on volunteers to
make the event possible. If you would like to help
out between 9am until 2pm, please email Julie at julie@uktriathlon.co.uk
or call her direct on 01270 842800 she’ll be
delighted to hear from you.

Main Points to Remember...
1 Allow plenty of time to get to the venue, park,
register, rack your cycle and get to the swim start
for your compulsory race safety brief. Make sure you
take these competitor notes with you for reference!
2 Know exactly your start time and how many laps of
each discipline you are doing (write it on your arm
in marker pen if you feel you may forget!).
3 The cycle course is multi lapped so make sure you
adopt a method of counting laps, especially if competing
in the Classic or Relay Triathlon.
4 Take extra care on the cycle course, especially
at the turn around points at both ends, watch for
pedestrians crossing at all times. Keep to the left
at all times except when overtaking.
5 Enjoy the race and once you have read all this information,
if you still have questions please ask at registration,
we are there to help!
Race Itinerary
& Info...
DIRECTIONS & PARKING
Follow the A259 Brighton to Eastbourne road through
Seaford and follow the signs for "Triathlon Parking"
in the town centre. There is allocated parking for
the triathlon that is sign posted right next to the
race venue. There is a £3.00 charge for the
entire day with a charity donation being made. Alternatively
use any of the car parks in and around Seaford. Please
do not attempt to park on the seafront, as it will
be closed off ready for the race. There is a rail
service run by Govia between Brighton and Eastbourne,
which stops at Seaford. Seaford will be busy so allow
plenty of time for parking and to get to registration.
REGISTRATION
(Located in the marquee on Martello Fields, close
to the Martello Tower Museum)
Registration is open on Friday 2:00pm to 5:00pm and
Saturday from 7:45am to 12:00pm
At registration you collect your race numbers, safety
pins to attach numbers, swim cap and official T-shirt.
Race numbers must not be mutilated or folded in any
way, as this will constitute a 2 minute penalty and
may mean incomplete or no results! Make sure your
race numbers are clearly displayed on your front and
back for the cycle and run sections of the race and
are pinned in all four corners (if using an elastic
number belt pin numbers on top left and right hand
corners). It is good practice to write your name,
blood group and any allergies you may have on the
back of your race number in the unfortunate case of
an accident!
Please note, for yours and other competitors safety,
mobile phones, MP3 or any type of personal music system
that restricts your hearing is not permitted whilst
competing in the event.
BTF members
We support membership of the BTF and therefore we
recognise BTF members. In order to verify your BTF
Membership please show your 2010 BTF licence at registration
or you will have to pay the £5.00 difference.
The £5.00 extra that non BTF members have already
paid is the cost of a PRO TRI day licence that allows
you to compete.
CYCLE TRANSITION AREA OPENS AT 8:15AM
(You can only rack your cycle on the morning of your
race!)
Once registered you may go to the cycle transition
area, which is situated next to the registration marquee.
For security purposes make sure you have your race

The cycle course is on a closed road circuit that
is fast and flat with a turnaround at each end. Please
take extra care at the turnarounds and especially
watch for pedestrians crossing on the course, as the
elderly may be slow in doing so. Even though the road
is closed to vehicular traffic there may still be
cars on the course whether official or otherwise so
obey the Highway Code. Dismount your cycle at the
end of the cycle course, a marshal will tell you,
do not unfasten your helmet until you have racked
your cycle. You will not be allowed to take part without
a cycle helmet (NO HELMET NO RACE).
DRAFTING
Cyclists must maintain a forward distance of 5 metres
between each other at all times except when overtaking
when it is the responsibility of the overtaken rider
to drop back to maintain this gap. Drafting marshals
will strictly enforce this rule and offending cyclists
will receive a time penalty then disqualification
on the second offence.
COUNTING THE LAPS ON YOUR BIKE
3 laps is easy to count but 6 and 12 laps can be confusing
when you are "giving it your all" around
the course. A couple of tips we recommend are
1. Strap a watch (ideally Timex Ironman) with lap
counting on and every time you turn at the transition
end turn point press the lap button, your watch will
tell you the split time per lap and which lap you
are on!
2. Cut 6 or 12 pieces of electrical tape (any colour
you fancy!) into narrow short lengths and stick them
to your handle bars leaving half of each one folded
over so you can grab it. Every time you turn at the
transition end turn point you pull off a piece of
tape, leaving the remaining pieces of tape which represent
the amount of laps left for you to do. We record every
lap of every cyclist but cannot advise you of the
amount of laps you have done whilst you are competing.
It is done to check that competitors have completed
the required number of laps on the cycle course!
RUN (Fun 2.5K, Sprint 5K, Classic
& Relay 10K)

| |

| Sprint

2 x out

| Classic

4 x out

The run is fast and flat along the beach path. When
you have completed the run, filter through the finish
line. There is a feed station on each lap of the run
course and on the finish line, which will be serving
Gatorade isotonic sports drink and water.
RELAY COMPETITORS
(1500m-40K-10K)
Each member of the relay team completes one of the
disciplines in the triathlon. At registration you
will be given a wrist band which you have to relay
to the finish line. After completing the swim, the
swimmer then passes the wrist band to the cyclist
inside the cycle transition area next to where the
cycle is racked, the cyclist must not take their cycle
off the rack until receiving the wrist band. The cyclist
completes the cycle course and passes the band over
to the runner in the transition area only when the
cycle has been placed back on the rack. The runner
completes the run course and hands in the band at
the finish line.
PRIZES, PRIZE GIVING & RESULTS
There are prizes and medals for top 3 male & female
in the Classic, Sprint and Fun Triathlons. There are
prizes for all BTF 5 year age groups in the Sprint
Triathlon and The Classic Triathlon only. Prize giving
will take place soon after each race has finished
at the finish line, this will be announced over the
P.A. system. Results will be on the website at www.uktriathlon.co.uk
on Monday 16th August and will be available to view
only, soon after each race has finished.
Important note to all competitors as your safety is
paramount to us. The South Coast Triathlon is registered,
sanctioned and governed by PRO TRI a non bias association
dedicated to delivering professional health and safety,
risk assessment, rules and refereeing guidance to
the UK Triathlon
Race Series.
